3D Dental Technology at Alpharetta Comprehensive Dentistry
Dr. Lorenzo Minniti now has new 3D technology that is capable of producing scaled models of a patient’s actual dental anatomy, which, when combined with 3D scanning and imaging, can give him even more information for planning surgical placement of dental implants.
How it works
When a patient is missing a tooth that requires replacement with a dental implant, planning is important: the goal of dental implant placement is to insert the implant into the jaw bone in a location that is most likely to heal quickly and encourage the jaw bone to grow around the implant, or “integrate” for stability and retention.
- During the examination and planning stages, Dr. Minniti uses the patient’s digital xrays, 3D digital “impressions” and special software to navigate and map the form and structural layout of the patient’s jaw bone and surrounding teeth, creating a digital “mesh” model.
- He then converts the digital model to a special print format, which is sent to the 3D printer. The printer creates a resin model, which shows the actual size, shape and locations of the landmarks of the patient’s teeth, jaw and nerve canals.
- Using this hard model, Dr. Minniti can design a guide appliance that he can use during surgery to place the implant in the pre-planned location. This can save surgical time, which is beneficial to both Dr. Minniti and his patient.
